Soundhouse Youth Band
Plymouth Soundhouse Youth Band was re-launched in April 2007, and is going from strength to strength.

The Youth Band has grown in numbers recently to well over twenty players which is fantastic. A huge welcome to our newest members! The band is always looking for new players. Being a youth band, the age limit is 19 years. Our main aim is to learn whilst having fun!

The band makes regular public performances such as at the senior band's recent Spring Concert at the Soundhouse (please see the report in our news section).

On Friday 1st February the youth band, with many new members, entered the Saltash Festival of Music, under their new musical director Emma Heard. They played `Gorilla March` from `Monkeys and Apes`, and `Grounded`.

The adjudicator`s comments were:
March: "This enjoyed a tight ensemble with the rhythmical aspect having much control and certainty throughout. Some considered dynamics heightened the impression and intonation proved reliable across the entire band. Some attempt was made to bring out the different themes."
Grounded: "Always dancing, this also had lots of rhythmical vitality. the chords moved very safely with excellent attack between all players. Solo lines were integrated with much musical awareness. Some of the articulatory detail could have been even more pronounced here. Overall, excellent work which was a pleasure to adjudicate."

The band scored a total of 88%, winning a distinction, and a silver trophy! For most of the young players, this was their very first music festival as some have only been playing for a matter of months. A huge well done to all our youth band members - a fantastic night for all!

On January 26th 2008, the band was invited to play at the Plymouth Guildhall, in a concert to showcase all the Plymouth Youth Music Service Youth ensembles. For many of the players, this was their first ever concert to the public. The band played beautifully, not even put off by the many cameras projecting close up images of the players on a huge screen behind them! The audience greeted them very warmly with a huge round of applause. They were fantastic! Well done band!

A huge thank you to all the parents of children in the youth band for their continuing support which is so valuable to us.

Practices are 6.00 - 7.30 pm on Thursdays at the Soundhouse, Estover, Community College, Plymouth.
