Ken Ayre - Solo Horn

Ken started learning to play the tenor horn at the age of 7 with the Salvation Army in Kettering.

A family move brought Ken to Plymouth when he was 11 years old, where he moved to the cornet section. During the following 20 years, he continued playing with the Salvation Army bands in Plymouth, where he also spent time playing trombone, solo horn and finally back to playing solo cornet. After an extended break from banding, Ken started playing with Soundhouse Brass in November 2014, enjoying a return to playing and on his preferred instrument, the tenor horn.

Ken works as Quality Director for a German owned, international company, that has a manufacturing facility based in Plymouth.

Sally Jeffery - 1st Horn

Sally was a 'late starter' and first played a brass instrument when her younger son was learning cornet at primary school.   She played in non-contesting Hartland Town Band for a time together with her dad and son, before moving to Cornwall. In Cornwall, Sally played with Bugle Silver Band for ten years including National Finals (3rd Section) in 2009 and values the friendship and experience she gained playing and contesting at Bugle.

Sally joined Soundhouse Brass in January 2015 and was proud to have had a further opportunity to play in National Finals again with the Soundhouse crew.  She has played tenor horn for most of her banding career, is still learning, and is keen to encourage others and secure the future of brass banding!
